University of Houston Capstone Team 6 - Blog 4 From the work period of November 11, 2023 - November 25, 2023 Seal Team 6 has completed the first three milestones and has started working on task 4a. In Milestone 1, the team kicked started off the project and define the constraints of the project with the SLB client. In Milestone 2, the team worked on the design feasibility evaluation where it evolved research and brainstorming different design models for the client. In Milestone 3, the team completed the 3D design analysis and present it to the client. During that process team 6 had to calculate the heat transfer of the chamber and the spring as well as ensuring the device is accumulated within the budget of the client. Team 6 is currently working on presenting the part list and equipment needed to manufacture the design. In order to start ordering the items on the bills of materials (BOM). After obtaining all the parts the team will work on assembling the components that will incl...

University of Houston Capstone Team 6 - Blog 3     During the work period of October 28 to November 11, Team 6 has completed Milestone 2 and is approximately 75% completed with Milestone 3. At the time the team was 50% completed with milestone 2 and were brainstorming different design solutions to present to SLB during their weekly meetings with final top pick designs. After finalizing the design solution with the client the team worked on the  heat transfer calculations of the chamber and spring to determine the thickness of the desire insulation required to protect the load cell from the high heated temperatures.  To determine the stability and dimensions of the designed frame the team also performed solid mechanics calculations based on the expected loads. Finally, on November 11, 2023, the team finalized the CAD designs with the...

University of Houston Capstone Team 6 - Blog 2     The University of Houston Capstone Team 6 is dedicated to creating a testing device to address SLB's critical need for specialized testing of polymer springs. This device will accurately calculate spring compression, load, and temperature, enabling a comprehensive understanding of spring behavior under different force and temperature conditions.      The project presents certain challenges and constraints. The device must accommodate spring samples ranging from 0.125 to 0.500 inches in size, subjecting them to compression forces between 50 and 500 pounds. It should also be capable of raising the spring temperature from ambient to 400°F while monitoring how the compressed springs gradually lose their force over time. Furthermore, the team aims to design a compact device with minimal footpri...

University of Houston Capstone Team 6 - Blog 1     Springs are important in many products, like cars, planes, medical devices, and everyday items. They move in different ways and can handle different amounts of force. Springs come in different sizes, shapes, and materials, which affect how well they work. Testing equipment for springs needs to be able to control their movement and measure the force they can handle. Engineers have many options when choosing a testing system, and they should consider factors like the application, cost, and long-term value. Schlumberger (SLB), a global technology company, driving energy innovation for a balanced planet, is developing unique materials, but lacks the specialized testing equipment to better study the properties of these materials. One specific test they were missing was a compression test of polymer springs. The test involves applying force and temperature changes to these springs to study their behavior. We're going to creat...
